Virginia Lawyers Weekly reports in their December 1, 2008 issue about a $2.5 million dollar settlement in a wrongful death SUV rollover claim.
The plaintiff was driving on Route 7 in Fairfax county when his vehicle was struck by the defendant at a high rate of speed. This caused the plaintiff’s vehicle to roll, thus ejecting the plaintiff. Plaintiff died from head injuries, leaving his wife of 24 years and two children, ages 18 and 24.
The initial offer on the case was $1.2 million but the case finally settled at $2.5 million.
The efforts of the family’s lawyer resulted in a much higher settlement for the family in this tragic case. I feel sorry for the surviving family members losing their husband and father so suddenly.
This shows again why families in distress need lawyers to help them make the many tough decisions that arise during such a difficult time.
The American Insurance Institute’s own research shows that people who hire a lawyer get a settlement, on average, 3.5 times higher than those without a lawyer.
