Million Dollar Settlement – Mechanic’s wrist crushed when jack collapses under trailer
Tereall Jones v. Big Roc Tool
Tereall Jones worked at a large truck stop in Hanover County, Virginia. On the day of the incident, Tereall was changing tires on a 38,000 pound trailer with his new jack, when the jack failed and the trailer fell, crushing Tereall’s hand between the trailer tire and the trailer frame.
Doctors suggested amputation of the crushed wrist but Tereall refused and underwent extensive medical treatment, including three surgeries involving wrist replacement. The result of the medical treatment made Tereall’s wrist look close to normal but he was left with significant impairment of his upper body.
Tereall contacted Mr. O’Bryan who sued the distributor of the Chinese-made jack. After a long case complicated by the distributor filing a third-party action against the manufacturer and then a bankruptcy petition by the defendant, the case settled in mediation for one million dollars.
