The Harrisonburg Daily News Record reports on a tragic accident that occurred last Friday November 28 on Interstate 81 north of New Market.

A sudden snow storm came up and made the roads slick, causing some vehicles to run off the road. Jose Alberto Sarmiento of Texas apparently lost control of his truck and caused a chain-reaction crash, hitting several vehicles.

The only victims of the crash were traveling together in a Ford Escort. They included 80-year-old Cordula Lear, her 4-year-old grandson Ivan David Ryman and 21-month-old Maggie Grace Ryman. The children’s mother, Serena Ryman, was driving the car and received only minor injuries.

This is a truly tragic story. My heart goes out to Ms. Ryman and it is saddening to think about someone losing their family all at once.

The truck driver was charged with reckless driving.
