One in Eight drivers are Uninsured Motorists
Data from the Insurance Research Council indicates that nationwide one in eight drivers are driving without insurance. In Virginia there are nearly one in ten drivers driving uninsured.
This is bad news for insured drivers. Luckily in Virginia your insurance policy automatically covers you for bodily injury caused by uninsured drivers in a car accident.. This is why it is important to have a good car insurance policy. When you are in an accident, the only policy you know for sure that will cover you is your own policy.
For damage to your car, your own policy will cover the damage, as long as it is not a liability only policy. That is why I strongly recommend that you DO NOT have a liability only policy for your car insurance.
I recommend that drivers in Virginia have full coverage and bodily injury coverage of AT LEAST $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident. Higher coverage amounts are even better. You should also strongly consider getting rental car coverage. Another thing that is nice to have is medical expense benefits AKA medpay. Medpay helps to pay your medical bills if you are in a car accident.
